Smart homes are houses with devices that have internet connectivity. The equipment enables remote monitoring and managing of the home systems. Home automation (smart home) technology provides security, effectiveness, and comfort to homeowners. The devices work together and communicate to save costs, automate actions, and function based on the residents’ preferences. All the homeowner has to do is control them with a smart device with an internet connection. The advantages of a smart home include:

  • The devices use hardwired or wireless systems, which are more reliable and more difficult for hackers to access.
  • The devices boost the resale value of the home.
  • A person can control many elements, such as climate, lighting, kitchen appliances, entertainment, and security.

All the devices in a smart home are accessible from a single central point, that is, a smart device, such as a laptop. The home automation system gets installed on a networked device. The appliances are self-learning, so they check the inhabitant’s schedule and make adjustments when required. Smart homes are becoming more expansive and can feature a number of devices.

1 - Smart Appliances

With a smart home, the appliances are safer and more efficient to use. Smart appliances connect with smart devices and are controllable from anywhere. An example is a smart oven with an Infrared Grill that preheats, changes its temperature, and alerts the owner when the food is ready. Other appliances include smart coffee machines that automatically brew coffee, smart washing machines, smart refrigerators to track product expiration, and a kitchen block to store knives and sterilize them with UV LED lights.

2 - Smart Doorbells

A smart doorbell allows a homeowner to answer their door from anywhere in the world using a smartphone. The doorbell also alerts a person when the bell rings or someone comes near the door. The features of this doorbell include Wi-Fi connectivity, rechargeable battery, HD live video, motion detection, and Infrared alerts. A smart doorbell boosts security because even when not home, homeowners can monitor their house to see if any thieves approach their door. These can be combined with smart locks to form a very smart entryway.

3 - Smart Entertainment Devices

In a smart home, entertainment is a top priority. Entertainment electronics with smartphone or tablet connectivity make it that more thrilling. An example is a smart television with internet connectivity, voice recognition, and gesture detection software. Other examples are a smart remote control that plays music and movies from online sources, a wireless sound system where one adjusts the music volume from a smartphone, and a Smart Blu-ray player that can run apps such as Netflix, Amazon, and YouTube.

4 - Smart Lighting

Smart lights enable a person to control the lights and program them to their schedule. The innovative and efficient smart lights can be voice-controlled or app-controlled, and they boost home security. The types of smart light bulbs include spotlights and candle bulbs. One can get a variety of smart bulbs that automatically turn blue to lower melatonin and help one sleep faster. Also, some lights change color depending on the time. Smart light bulbs can also sense intruders and adjust the lighting as programmed.

5 - Smart Cameras

A person can place smart cameras anywhere in their home to provide security. These surveillance cameras provide facial recognition features, smartphone integration, and remote monitoring. Great smart cameras also offer motion detection to capture moving objects and trigger alarms when they detect suspicious movement. There’s line crossing monitoring for surveying vehicles, people, or other objects which cross a predetermined virtual line, then set off alerts. Smart cameras have network disconnection alerts that inform a homeowner if intruders have compromised the network and automatically signal the authorities. They have object removal monitoring which triggers an alarm when an object, such as a vehicle, gets removed from a predefined area.

6 - Smart Thermostats

A smart thermostat plugs into a home’s HVAC system to enable a user to regulate the temperature through their smartphone. A thermostat also controls air conditioning and ventilation. The thermostats have sensors for zonal temperature control, smartphone tracking to either heat or cool the home when the homeowners are close, and energy saving. Smart thermostats have Wi-Fi integration which allows the occupants to schedule home temperatures. They also automatically pick up occupants’ habits and modify settings to provide optimal efficiency and comfort. Most thermostats are iOS and Android compatible, have humidity sensors, light sensors, and motion detection capabilities.
